ANZAC Day | An opportunity for reflection & remembrance
Published on:
22 April 2026

ANZAC Day holds a deeply significant place in the national identity of Australia. Observed each year on April 25, it commemorates the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand soldiers who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

Its origins trace back to the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, where the bravery, resilience and mateship of the ANZAC troops became defining qualities of the national character.

Today, ANZAC Day is not only a time of remembrance, but also an opportunity to reflect on values such as courage, respect, and unity.

Our fixtured ANZAC Day match continues to play a key role in connecting ANZAC Day to the community. Players, officials, volunteers and supporters all take part in honouring those who have served, reinforcing the idea that community sport is about more than just competition. It becomes a platform to educate younger generations, acknowledge history, and bring people together under shared values.

The Bendigo FNL thanks the City of Greater Bendigo, South Bendigo FNC, Eaglehawk FNC, Sandhurst FNC and the Bendigo RSL for making this standalone blockbuster happen.

Message from the Bendigo RSL President, Glenn Ludeman.

From 1:30pm on Anzac Day 2026, beneath autumn skies at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, the South Bendigo Football Netball Club and Eaglehawk Football Netball Club meet in football and netball. Players aspire to the spirit of Anzac, demonstrating courage, mateship and respect, echoing the legacy of those who have served.

President of the Bendigo District RSL Sub-Branch, Glenn Ludeman, said, “This is a great opportunity to showcase the game on a day that means a lot to the Bendigo community; however, it’s vital we ensure the day is given the respect it deserves.”

Prior to 1:00pm, commemorative events across Australia and at its embassies and bases abroad pause to reflect and honour those who served, those still serving, and those 103021 ADF members who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of Australia and its interests. So many more were lost after or continue to suffer as a result of their service.

Proud clubs stand together, remembering the past while inspiring future generations through unity and respect. As the siren sounds and play unfolds, past and present meet, reminding all that the Anzac spirit endures not just in memory, but in our respect, our actions, and our community.

Lest We Forget.
